Our Phonics leader is Mrs Eckersley.
At East Ward Community Primary School we aim to provide high quality teaching and learning experiences which result not only in the children becoming skilled and fluent readers, but also in them developing a lifelong love of reading.
At East Ward, we are a Read, Write, Inc school and we embrace the strategies taught in Read, Write, Inc in all areas of our EYFS and Key Stage One curriculum.
Read, Write, Inc is a systematic approach to teaching and developing early reading and writing skills. Our children are immersed in an environment which is rich in sounds and vocabulary right from Nursery, which ensures that they are prepared with the necessary resources and strategies for reading from the very start of their learning journey.
Read, Write, Inc starts by initially teaching children Set One letter sounds and gradually develops as children progress into Reception and Year One by incorporating elements of guided reading, spelling strategies and structured writing.
It is important for children in our Nursery to begin their journey to becoming confident readers by first hearing the sounds in different words. Fred the Frog helps children to do this by breaking words into ‘Fred Talk.’ Children are first taught how to hear sounds and blend them together before being introduced to sounds and reading them.
Our children love the consistent and systematic approach to teaching and learning and look forward to their daily lesson of Read, Write, Inc with Fred the frog!

Our bespoke Phonics Workshops are a fantastic way of finding out how your child will learn to spell, read and write in Reception and Year One. The workshops are every term (Autumn, Spring and Summer). Mrs Eckersley will demonstrate how we teach the skills of Reading and Writing in Reception and Year One and will provide you with lots of activities that you can use at home to help your child.
